Trump wants to dismantle the Department of Education. Debtors will pay the price

To: Rep. Kennedy, Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Orem, UT

November 21

Earlier this week, the Trump administration announced their plan to dismantle the Department of Education (ED) — a move that is illegal, expensive, and deeply unpopular.    Education Secretary and corrupt billionaire Linda McMahon claims that this plan will reduce bureaucracy, but this argument falls flat when the Department of Education is so understaffed that they just requested an 18-month extension to provide debt relief to borrowers defrauded by for-profit institutions, violating a court mandate and costing debtors thousands in additional accrued interest.    This move is also illegal. Trump doesn’t have the votes he needs in Congress to shut down the Department of Education altogether, so he’s attempting to outsource ED’s programs to other agencies. This move would waste millions of dollars at a time when nearly six million debtors are in default on their student loans, and millions more who are owed cancellation after decades trapped in IDR face an additional tax burden six to ten thousand dollars in 2026.    Americans overwhelmingly oppose shutting down ED. Dismantling and outsourcing its programs will hurt the very students ED is meant to protect — disabled students, working-class students, Indigenous students, parenting students, and more. Please protect borrowers, educators, and families by defending the Department of Education and opposing Trump’s illegal declarations. Petition courtesy of Debt Collective.
