A Path Forward: Why We Need Ranked Choice Voting

I am writing as a concerned constituent who is deeply worried about the state of our democracy. I believe a fundamental change to our electoral process is necessary to ensure a more representative future for all. This is why I am urging you to support and implement Ranked Choice Voting (RCV).
Our current winner-take-all system has created a cycle of division and negative campaigning. We are constantly forced to choose between two dominant parties, neither of which seems to fully represent our diverse viewpoints. For many of us, political affiliation has become less about shared values and more about a rigid class structure, leaving us feeling unrepresented and unheard. This system promotes the fear of a "wasted vote" and discourages us from supporting candidates who best reflect our values.
Ranked Choice Voting is a straightforward, common-sense solution. It allows voters to rank candidates in order of their preference. If no candidate wins a majority on the first count, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are instantly redistributed to the voters' next choice. This process continues until a majority winner is found, ensuring the eventual winner has broad support.
This method has compelling benefits. It eliminates the "spoiler effect" and the need for costly, low-turnout runoff elections. It encourages candidates to seek broader support and leads to more civil, issue-focused campaigns. Most importantly, RCV empowers voters by allowing us to vote for the candidate we truly believe in without fear of helping an opponent get elected. It fosters an environment where multiple perspectives can thrive, opening the door to new voices and ideas.
I urge you to consider how RCV can revitalize our elections. It is a proven reform that has been successfully implemented across the country, saving money and promoting fairer, more representative outcomes. By adopting Ranked Choice Voting, you can create a more competitive and inclusive political landscape that truly serves the will of the people.
