I am writing to demand the immediate removal of the banner featuring President Trump's face from the Robert F. Kennedy Building at the Justice Department headquarters. This display fundamentally undermines the independence that is essential to the Department of Justice's constitutional function.
The Justice Department must operate as an impartial institution serving the American people, not as a promotional vehicle for any president. The installation of this banner, along with similar displays at the Department of Agriculture and Department of Labor, transforms federal buildings into personal branding opportunities. This is particularly troubling given that the DOJ has initiated investigations into several of Trump's political opponents, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and Senator Adam Schiff, following Trump's September social media post demanding "JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!"
Attorney General Pam Bondi's recent testimony before the House Judiciary Committee further demonstrated this problematic relationship. When called to address the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, she instead defended the president's achievements and confronted lawmakers by stating "You sit here and you attack the president and I'm not going to have it." This behavior, combined with the banner installation, signals that the DOJ is functioning as an extension of the White House rather than maintaining its traditional autonomy.
The DOJ's defense that the banner celebrates "250 years of our great country" is insufficient justification for what amounts to political propaganda on a federal building. The placement on the building named for Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, who championed justice department independence, adds insult to injury.
I urge you to take immediate action to have this banner removed and to introduce legislation preventing the installation of presidential imagery on Justice Department facilities. The integrity of our justice system depends on its independence from political influence.
