Reject Anti-Democratic Budget Provision Stripping Courts' Contempt Power

To: Rep. Joyce, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Willoughby, OH

June 17

The Republican budget bill contains egregious provisions that must be vehemently opposed. Not only does it provide massive tax breaks for the wealthy at the expense of vital social safety nets like Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and VA benefits, but it also inexplicably raises taxes on the poor and middle class. This redistribution of wealth from those who can least afford it to the nation's billionaires is unconscionable. However, an even more alarming measure is hidden within the bill - a provision stripping federal courts of their contempt power, effectively neutering their ability to enforce rulings and injunctions against the executive branch. This represents a direct assault on the system of checks and balances fundamental to American democracy. Without judicial oversight, the President would be free to violate constitutional rights and defy court orders with impunity, resulting in a de facto monarchy with Trump as king. Such an undemocratic power grab cannot be allowed to pass. Preserving the independence of the judiciary and preventing further concentration of power in the hands of an unrestrained executive is imperative to upholding the rule of law. This unconstitutional measure undermining the courts must be expunged from the bill to safeguard the foundations of the nation's democratic system of government. The American people's voice and constitutional rights hang in the balance. This entire bill must be stopped, and a fair, bipartisan bill must be passed.
