The H-8260 amendment is dangerous. It strips local library boards of their authority and replaces them with city council members that have neither the time nor experience to take on those duties. It removes accreditation standards from the American Library Association and Iowa Library Association. Worst of all, it requires that a library review all of their materials, book by book, before they can rent them out to a minor. Considering our public libraries collectively contain millions of books, and that there is no funding included in this amendment, that is a recipe for banning minors from using our public libraries altogether.
This is wrong. Iowans are known for our excellent library system, and our local librarians are intelligent, qualified professionals who want nothing more than to serve their communities.
