I teach at a community college. Even there, where tuition is the lowest that students can find, my students need student loans in addition to their financial aid packages, school-provided scholarships, and part-time or full-time jobs to stay in school. Now our "president" wants to demolish the Department of Education, which manages the school loan program. The program has become predatory enough since the 1980s when I took out my, at that time, inexpensive school loans, but now my students will either not have the funding they need, or will be at the mercy of truly predatory lending from individual banks offering student loan programs of their own at extortionate rates. In a world where employers demand college degrees for entry-level jobs, and yet are the same people who say, "College is a luxury," my students need all the help they can get. My Health Sciences students are tomorrow's nurses and paramedical professionals. Please help them. Please save the Department of Education.
