Call for Congressional Investigation into ICE Minneapolis Shooting
To: Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray

January 9
I am writing to urge you to call for a congressional investigation into the ICE shooting incident in Minneapolis. Recent video analysis by the New York Times Visual Investigations team has revealed serious discrepancies between the Trump Administration's official account of this shooting and what actually occurred.
The investigation examined footage from three different camera angles to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to this forensic video analysis, the vehicle involved appears to be turning away from the federal officer at the moment when the officer opened fire. This directly contradicts the official narrative provided by the Trump Administration, which presumably justified the use of deadly force based on a threat to the officer.
When federal law enforcement agencies provide accounts of deadly force incidents that are contradicted by video evidence, it undermines public trust and raises serious questions about accountability. The use of lethal force by any federal officer must meet strict constitutional standards, and the public deserves accurate information about whether those standards were met in this case.
I am asking you to take three specific actions. First, request a full briefing from ICE leadership about this incident and the discrepancies between their account and the video evidence. Second, call for the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General to conduct an independent investigation. Third, support legislation that would require body cameras for all ICE officers conducting enforcement operations and mandate timely public release of footage in cases involving use of force.
Federal immigration enforcement must operate within constitutional bounds and with transparency. When video evidence contradicts official accounts of deadly force incidents, Congress has an obligation to investigate. Your constituents deserve to know that federal officers are being held to the highest standards of accountability, regardless of which administration is in power.
