As your constituent, I am writing on the eve of the Senate Judiciary Committee vote to urge you in the strongest possible terms to vote no on confirming Todd Blanche as Attorney General.
The Attorney General is tasked with upholding the Constitution and enforcing the law without fear or favor. Mr. Blanche’s record reveals a troubling pattern of prioritizing political loyalty and private interests over equal justice—and here are just a few of the many reasons why you should vote NO on his confirmation:
1. Unresolved Executive Immunity & Slush Fund: While Mr. Blanche’s DOJ was forced to abandon the $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund under public pressure, the separate clause shielding private tax liability has never been rescinded. Under questioning from Senator John Cornyn, Mr. Blanche admitted the settlement remains an enforceable contract and refused to commit in writing that the arrangement is dead, leaving open the door for private enforcement suits.
2. Retaliation Against Press Freedom: Mr. Blanche personally authorized subpoenas against four New York Times journalists following reporting on Air Force One security concerns, defending the action under oath by claiming, "They're material witnesses, just like a reporter would be a material witness to a car crash". A federal judge subsequently forced DOJ attorneys to withdraw the subpoenas under threat of sanctions. Separately, Mr. Blanche defended "very generous" pardons for rioters who assaulted police officers, without condemning the inclusion of violent offenders.
3. Mishandling of Epstein Files & Survivors: A federal court ruled his Department of Justice violated the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Abuse survivors described his demeanor during mandatory oversight meetings as abrasive, condescending, and dismissive—leaving meetings intended to resolve concerns more frustrated than before.
4. Active Conflict of Interest: Mr. Blanche confirmed under oath that his personal attorney-client relationship with Donald Trump remains active. An Attorney General’s sole client must be the United States, not a private patron.
Mr. Blanche has demonstrated that he will use the Department of Justice as a shield for political allies and a weapon against critics. Please stand up for equal justice and the rule of law. Vote no on Todd Blanche before this misuse of authority becomes permanent.
