Vote Against the SAVE Act – A Threat to Voting Rights
To: Sen. Blackburn
From: A constituent in Franklin, TN
February 14, 2025
Dear Senator Blackburn,
I am writing to urge you to vote against the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a bill that threatens to disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters—particularly women, minorities, and married individuals who have legally changed their names.
As a woman, I have been acutely aware of how bureaucratic barriers disproportionately affect us, especially when it comes to legal identity. This is one of the very reasons I chose not to change my name when I got married—so that I could maintain my autonomy and avoid unnecessary obstacles to my rights, including voting. However, millions of women, including yourself, have made a different choice and legally changed their names after marriage. Under the SAVE Act’s rigid requirements, voters like you and me could face unnecessary scrutiny, delays, or even disenfranchisement—simply because of a legal name change.
This bill is not about election integrity; it is about creating barriers to the ballot box. Stringent documentation requirements have historically impacted married women, communities of color, and other marginalized groups—groups who already face disproportionate challenges when it comes to voting access. This legislation is a step backward, undoing decades of progress in ensuring all Americans have a fair and equal right to vote.
How can you stand by and allow these fundamental rights to be eroded? Throughout history, women have fought tirelessly for our right to participate in democracy. Supporting the SAVE Act would mean turning your back on that legacy and on countless Tennessee voters who deserve to have their voices heard.
I urge you to stand on the right side of history. Please vote NO on the SAVE Act and protect the voting rights of all Americans. I would appreciate a response detailing your position on this bill and your commitment to ensuring free and fair elections for all.
