Fully Fund SNAP Benefits During Government Shutdown

To: Rep. Self, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Princeton, TX

November 8

The recent Supreme Court order temporarily blocking full funding for SNAP benefits during the government shutdown is deeply concerning. This decision affects approximately one in eight Americans who rely on this crucial food assistance program. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to ensure full funding for SNAP benefits. The Trump administration's plan to provide only 65% of the maximum monthly benefit is unacceptable and has already been rejected by a federal court. This partial funding approach will leave millions of vulnerable Americans struggling to put food on the table. The uncertainty created by this legal battle is causing unnecessary stress and hardship for SNAP recipients across the country. While some states like Wisconsin, Oregon, Hawaii, California, Kansas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington have already issued full November payments, many others are left in limbo. This patchwork approach creates an unfair system where access to essential nutrition depends on one's state of residence. The administration's argument that full funding usurps legislative and executive authority is misguided. In times of crisis, it is the government's responsibility to ensure the basic needs of its citizens are met. SNAP is a vital safety net that supports not only individuals and families but also local economies. I implore you to advocate for and support legislative measures that will guarantee full SNAP funding during this shutdown and any future government closures. The well-being of millions of Americans hangs in the balance. We cannot allow political disputes to jeopardize the food security of our most vulnerable populations. Time is of the essence. With the Supreme Court's order set to expire 48 hours after the appeals court ruling, we need swift and decisive action. Please work with your colleagues to pass emergency legislation that will override any attempts to reduce SNAP benefits during government shutdowns. Your leadership on this issue is crucial. By ensuring full SNAP funding, you will be protecting the health and dignity of countless families in our community and across the nation. I look forward to hearing about the steps you will take to address this urgent matter.
