Why Are Private Tech Companies Being Allowed Inside Federal Agencies

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

I am writing to express serious concern about recent reporting describing how the Department of Justice has cleared the way for technologists to work inside the federal government while still maintaining ties to their private-sector employers. The administration’s new initiative would bring technologists from private companies into federal agencies while allowing some of them to remain connected to their employers and even retain financial interests while serving in government roles. These individuals could take temporary assignments in government and then return to their companies afterward. This arrangement raises obvious questions about conflicts of interest. The same companies that may have contracts with the federal government could potentially place their employees inside agencies where decisions about technology procurement, data access, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity policy are made. Programs like this must have strong safeguards to prevent conflicts and to protect sensitive government systems and data. At the same time, the federal government has reportedly lost tens of thousands of technology workers in the past year as agencies downsized or saw employees depart, leaving critical systems understaffed and modernization projects stalled. If the government truly needs technical expertise, why are we not investing in stable public servants rather than creating a revolving door between powerful technology companies and federal agencies? The American people deserve clear answers: • What safeguards are in place to prevent conflicts of interest for technologists who maintain ties to private companies while working in government?
• Will these individuals have access to sensitive government data or procurement decisions affecting their employers or competitors?
• Why are stock holdings or financial interests apparently allowed to remain in place during these assignments?
• How will Congress ensure transparency and oversight over this program? Government decisions about technology, artificial intelligence, and data infrastructure affect national security, privacy, and billions of taxpayer dollars. Allowing private-sector employees to move in and out of government roles without strict guardrails risks undermining public trust. I urge you to investigate this issue, demand full transparency from the agencies involved, and ensure that federal policy is made in the public interest—not influenced by private corporate relationships. I would appreciate hearing your position on this matter and what steps you plan to take to ensure proper oversight.
