Denounce the Federal Abandonment of Disaster Victims

To: Gov. Newsom, Asm. Hart, Sen. Limón

From: A verified voter in Lompoc, CA

July 12

I’m writing to ask you to publicly denounce the reckless and inhumane actions taken by Secretary Kristi Noem that led to catastrophic failures during the recent Texas floods. As reports have confirmed, FEMA call centers went dark in the middle of a deadly emergency because Secretary Noem allowed basic contracts to expire. People were stranded, terrified, and unable to reach help. That is not leadership. It’s sabotage. California has seen more than its share of wildfires, floods, and disasters. We know the cost of hesitation. We know that delays in response cost lives. We cannot allow this kind of gross negligence to become federal policy. And we certainly cannot let it go unchallenged. You’ve stood up before to defend decency and disaster readiness. I’m asking you to do it again now. Make a public statement. Condemn this failure. Call it what it is: an act of cruelty and a warning sign of worse to come. We need our leaders to speak truth when others won’t.
