Urgent Concern: New National Security Strategy Threatens U.S. Global Leadership

I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent regarding the recently released National Security Strategy of the Trump administration. This document represents a sharp and dangerous break from decades of bipartisan foreign policy that strengthened democratic alliances, deterred authoritarian aggression, and protected U.S. national security.
For over seventy-five years, the United States has served as the anchor of a rules-based international order. This strategy abandons that role in favor of fear-based, transactional relationships and regional “spheres of influence.” Rather than reinforcing democratic partnerships, it openly questions the value of long-standing alliances that have preserved global stability since World War II.
Most alarming is its treatment of Europe and NATO. The strategy echoes rhetoric associated with far-right movements and Russian disinformation while offering no meaningful plan to counter Russian aggression. It even supports limits on NATO expansion—directly aligning with Kremlin demands and undermining Ukraine’s survival. This signals retreat at the very moment democracies face their greatest security threat in generations.
Equally troubling is the abandonment of universal democratic norms in favor of authoritarian accommodation. Human rights and democratic reform are deprioritized in the Middle East for transactional deals with autocratic regimes. This legitimizes repression and weakens America’s moral authority globally.
On China, the strategy contradicts itself by calling for both confrontation and conciliation without a clear framework, increasing the risk of dangerous miscalculation—especially regarding Taiwan.
Taken together, this strategy weakens NATO, emboldens autocrats, destabilizes global security, and creates a power vacuum hostile regimes are eager to fill. This is not merely a policy change; it is a fundamental reversal of America’s post-war leadership role.
I urge you to:
• Demand congressional oversight and hearings on this strategy
• Publicly reaffirm U.S. commitments to NATO, Ukraine, and democratic allies
• Oppose any effort to legitimize Russian aggression or weaken collective defense
• Defend a foreign policy rooted in democratic values and international law
This is not a partisan issue—it is a national security crisis. I ask that you take a firm public stand.
