End the Genocide in Gaza

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Springfield, OR

May 19

End the Genocide in Gaza. I do not know how we got here. A nation of freedom having to beg it's representation to reflect the will of the people and put an end to the genocide in Gaza. What is happening in Gaza is a sad reality of a long standing oppression that did not end when Israel pulled out of the strip. They still controlled all the trade and travel by land, sea and air, as well as their water and electricity. Including through Egypt's border. They would turn off their water or electricity for weeks at a time causing dozens of humanitarian disasters over the years. They drastically restricted all of their trade, actively preventing them from getting anything for making infrastructure of their own to control their water or electricity. Malnutrition became widespread due to the embargo. Now, malnutrition is nearing full blown famine. There were still yellow lines that they could not cross or they would be shot. In the West bank, the IDF still supported settlers actively to attack Palestinians. They ripped them from their homes, demolished them, poisoned their livestock and even killed protesters. They also have yellow lines they cannot cross and "Jewish only" streets. Over 1.9 million have been displaced in Gaza in the last 2 years. 80,000 in the West bank. They still kept thousands of Palestinians prisoner for weeks to months at a time with no charges against them. Including hundreds of children. Reports of rape and torture in these prisons date back to the 1950s. It was confirmed in 1987 and again recently by two Israeli organizations who inspected the prisons. In this current conflict, according to the IDFs own numbers, nearly 80,000 have been killed. 83% were civilians. To put this in context, WW2 had a 67% civilian kill rate. This does not include those buried in the rubble, which is expected to be 10,000 more. 3% of the population has been wiped out in the span of two short years. 20,000 were children. Gaza now has the highest rate of child amputees in the world, averaging at around ten per day. Ten percent of babies born there die in their first year. A nine fold increase from before this conflict began. The deaths of infants under 5 have increased by 75%. Birth rates have fallen by 41%. These people are not animals, this dehumanizing form of collective punishment must end. The only way to actually end this is to give the Palestinians actual freedom. Freedom to dictate their own trade, manage their own electricity and water supply. Freedom to move anywhere on their own land and between their lands. Freedom to travel outside their country. OR, to make them citizens with equal rights for all. No matter which, this must end. Please end all support of Israel and send in international intermediaries to negotiate peace and give the Palestinians the same rights every human being deserves. The same rights we fought for and founded our nation upon. Human lives are in your hands.
