Demand for Immediate Oversight of DOJ Accountability Failures
To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

March 31
I am writing to express serious concern regarding recent reporting about a Department of Justice whistleblower complaint that raises alarming questions about the breakdown of internal oversight within the DOJ.
According to the report, a former DOJ prosecutor has alleged that the Office of the Inspector General failed to investigate multiple serious misconduct complaints over an extended period. These complaints reportedly included allegations submitted not only by the whistleblower, but also by members of Congress. The claim that these concerns were ignored or redirected to offices without the capacity to properly investigate them suggests a systemic failure in the very accountability structure Congress put in place.
Even more troubling is the assertion that key oversight mechanisms may no longer be functioning as intended. If internal watchdogs are declining to investigate credible allegations, the integrity of the Department of Justice and public trust in it are at risk.
This is not a partisan issue. Regardless of administration, the American people depend on the DOJ to follow the law, respect court orders, and operate with transparency. When credible whistleblower complaints are not taken seriously, it undermines confidence in our justice system and raises the possibility of unchecked abuse of power.
I urge you to take immediate action by calling for a formal congressional investigation into these allegations, demanding testimony from DOJ leadership and the Office of the Inspector General, ensuring that whistleblower protections are enforced and strengthened, and restoring transparency and accountability within the Department of Justice.
Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to ensure that oversight systems function properly. If those systems are failing, it is imperative that you act quickly to restore them.
I expect you to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and to keep your constituents informed of the steps you are taking.
