Block the USPS Rule That Would Strip Mail Voting Rights

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Sherman, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in Sherman Oaks, CA

May 29

Block the USPS proposed rule that would gut mail voting in this country. The rule would bar any voter not on a federal list from receiving a mail ballot — a massive federal takeover of elections that bypasses Congress entirely and violates the Constitution's clear grant of election authority to the states. The federal databases this rule relies on, including DHS records, have documented errors. Eligible voters will be turned away not because they did anything wrong, but because a flawed federal list didn't include them. USPS even built in "supplemental submissions" to patch mistakes after the fact — an admission that the system will fail real people. And attaching unique barcodes to individual ballots to "facilitate law enforcement" is voter surveillance, plain and simple. Courts are already moving toward standing to challenge this. Law professor Justin Levitt called the proposed rule "one step closer to an end to this charade." Congress needs to act before this rule is finalized. Use every legislative tool available to stop it.
