VOTE NO ON THE SAVE ACT. PROTECT OUR RIGHT TO VOTE
To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Pfluger, Sen. Cornyn
From: A verified voter in Mason, TX
February 13
Here we go again. The GOP continues to think that if you give something heinous a nice patriotic name, that we the people will just smile and swallow it. The SAVE Act for instance. Show an ID to vote. It sounds reasonable until you consider the consequences. I’ll use the example of my mother. A not-atypical scenario for many elderly people. She lived in a small rural west Texas town. She voted in every election once she was able to. But when she couldn’t drive anymore she no longer had a valid driver’s license. She could not afford to travel, much less afford a passport. There was no place in her town to get a state ID. And she changed her last name when she got married so even presenting a birth certificate, if she had one, would have been problematic under the SAVE Act because her last name wouldn’t match. That is a huge hurdle for married women to try and overcome, especially when, even now in 2026, women largely change their last names upon marriage. If the SAVE Act becomes law, all Americans will have to provide a birth certificate, a passport, or one of a limited number of documents, such as certain (but not all) military ID cards, every time they register or reregister to vote. It may seem innocuous enough, the idea that you have to prove you’re a citizen, but at least 21M Americans don’t have that kind of proof readily available. Only 51% of Americans have passports, which cost adults applying for the first time a $165.00 fee, not to mention assembling the documents you need, getting a photograph of yourself, and making it to an appointment. The bill would end registration by mail and online because it requires voters to show proof of citizenship to election officials “in person” when they register. That would also make it difficult, if not impossible, to conduct voter registration drives, say, at churches or schools. States that automatically register voters when they turn 18 would no longer be able to do so. And if you move or need to reregister for any reason, this applies to you, too. You’d have to bring your passport or original birth certificate in for inspection every time you do that. Do not allow this voter suppression to pass. Because that’s what it is. No matter how it’s presented. Taking away the most basic right of Americans will backfire spectacularly. Don’t help our Republic kill itself. VOTE NO.
