I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I oppose the current rescission request sitting before you to claw back money already approved by Congress for both public broadcasting and foreign aid.
In a world that is getting more divisive and violent each day, providing funds for humanitarian projects becomes more critical than ever. These monies provide needed food, HIV prevention, clean water, basic education, and shelter for those in desperate need. Many of them are fleeing violent or unlivable conditions.
Providing this aid promotes U.S. interests and a positive image in the world. It shows that we are friends who will help, which creates allies and more willingness to agree to our initiatives and democratic principles in the future.
It is also simply the right thing to do. For our president to request taking back this already approved aid to help people while at the same time putting before you a budget that gives massive tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy is not my America. That is not how I want my own tax money spent. I want to help those who need it. I want to be part of a nation that does fair, just actions in the world, starting with humanitarian aid for those who have few options.
Vote no on this rescission request.
