Protect public lands, seek sustainable housing solutions

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Corpus Christi, TX

May 10

The proposed amendment to authorize the sale of federal lands in Nevada and Utah for affordable housing and other development is concerning. Public lands belong to all Americans and should be protected for future generations. Privatizing these lands could lead to exploitation by corporations and special interests, harming the environment and limiting public access. Rather than selling off public lands, we should invest in sustainable housing solutions that don't sacrifice our natural heritage. Federal lands provide invaluable resources for recreation, conservation, and culture. Once sold, it will be incredibly difficult to regain these lands for public use. Instead of short-term fixes that benefit a few, we need long-term, responsible policies that balance economic needs with environmental protection. Affordable housing is a crucial issue, but there are alternative approaches that don't involve selling public lands. I urge you to reject this amendment and work towards solutions that preserve our shared natural resources while addressing housing affordability through innovative urban planning, zoning reforms, and public-private partnerships. Protecting public lands ensures access for all Americans, safeguards ecosystems, and maintains our national treasures for generations to come. This amendment sets a dangerous precedent of privatizing public assets for private gain. We must prioritize the long-term well-being of our communities and environment over short-term financial incentives. I hope you will stand firm against this and any future attempts to sell off public lands.
