Condemn Trump's Violent Rhetoric and Protect Our Democracy

To: Sen. Plumb, Gov. Cox, Rep. Maloy, Rep. Dailey-Provost, Pres. Trump, Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

November 21

I am writing to express my profound outrage at the recent escalation of political violence in our country, particularly the inflammatory statements made by former and current President Donald Trump. His calls for the arrest and execution of Democratic members of Congress are not only deeply disturbing but represent a dangerous threat to the very foundations of our democracy. Trump's recent posts on Truth Social, in which he demanded that certain members of Congress be "ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL" for what he baselessly termed "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR," cross a line that should alarm every American. Even more chilling was his reposting of a comment suggesting we "HANG THEM." This rhetoric from a former president and current presidential candidate is unprecedented and utterly un-American. The video that sparked Trump's ire featured Senators and Representatives with military or intelligence backgrounds reminding service members of their duty to disobey illegal orders. This is a fundamental tenet of military service and international law, not an act of sedition. Senator Elissa Slotkin, one of the video's participants, has publicly clarified their intent to address concerns about potential misuse of military forces in domestic situations. I implore you to take immediate and decisive action to address this crisis. First, I urge you to issue a strong, unequivocal condemnation of Trump's statements. Second, I call on you to support a thorough investigation into whether these statements constitute criminal threats or incitement to violence. Third, I ask that you work with your colleagues to strengthen protections for elected officials against such threats. The safety of our elected representatives and the integrity of our democratic processes are at stake. We cannot allow this dangerous rhetoric to become normalized in our political discourse. It is crucial that we send a clear, bipartisan message that threats of violence against public officials are unacceptable and will be met with the full force of the law, regardless of the source. This is not a partisan issue; it is about preserving the core values of our nation. The escalation of political violence threatens the very fabric of our society. We must act now to prevent further deterioration of our political norms and to protect the lives of those who serve our country. I eagerly await your response detailing the concrete steps you will take to address this urgent threat to our democracy. The eyes of your constituents and indeed the nation are upon you. Let history record that you stood firmly against this dangerous tide of political violence.
