It is highly concerning that Representative Nancy Mace repeatedly used an offensive anti-transgender slur during a House committee hearing. Her refusal to apologize or even acknowledge the harm caused by such dehumanizing language is unacceptable for an elected official. Equally troubling is the committee chair's apparent dismissal of the slur, failing to uphold basic standards of respect and decorum. Elected leaders must be held accountable for promoting discrimination and bigotry, whether intentional or not. Representing all constituents with dignity is a fundamental responsibility. I urge you to condemn this incident and take steps to ensure transphobic rhetoric has no place in congressional proceedings. A diverse, inclusive democracy demands our leaders lead by example in creating spaces safe for all Americans.
