I am writing to urge you to support legislation requiring mandatory, independent medical evaluations of the President of the United States, with results reported transparently to Congress and the public.
Currently there is no law requiring presidential health disclosures, and history shows us this has been abused repeatedly. From Woodrow Wilson’s hidden stroke that left the country effectively without leadership, to Franklin Roosevelt’s declining health concealed from the public during World War II, to Ronald Reagan’s cognitive decline that many believe began while he was still in office, and his subsequent Alzheimer’s diagnosis five years after leaving. The American people have repeatedly been kept in the dark about the health of the person holding the most powerful office in the world. More recently, questions about President Biden’s cognitive health during his term raised similar concerns, demonstrating this is an ongoing and bipartisan problem that has gone unaddressed for too long.
I would like to see legislation that requires independent physicians, not those appointed by or serving at the pleasure of the president, to conduct regular evaluations, including standardized comprehensive cognitive testing. Results should be reported to Congress in a transparent and timely manner. Additionally, medical staff should be afforded whistleblower protections so they can report concerns without fear of retaliation or professional consequences.
This is not a partisan issue. It is about accountability, transparency, and the integrity of our democracy. Every American deserves to know that the person commanding our military and making critical decisions on our behalf is mentally and physically capable of doing so.
I respectfully request your support in championing this legislation, and I welcome a response regarding your position on this important matter.
