Stop this unchecked unconstitutional nonsense
To: Pres. Trump
From: A constituent in Fredericksburg, VA
February 5
I am writing to you as a Marine Corps veteran, a healthcare student, and the son of a Mexican immigrant who came to this country seeking a better life. My mother, like so many others, believed in the promise of the United States—the idea that through hard work and sacrifice, a better future was possible for her children. That belief is what drove me to serve this country, first in the military and now in medicine. I have always stood for the core values that define America—freedom, democracy, and opportunity. However, I am deeply concerned about the direction this nation is heading under your administration, particularly regarding the consolidation of power, the erosion of constitutional checks and balances, and the increasingly harsh immigration policies. While I understand the importance of government efficiency, the restructuring of federal agencies under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, raises significant concerns. The dismantling of key institutions, the disregard for congressional oversight, and the shifting of power toward unelected individuals are not reforms; they are dangerous overreaches. The United States was built on the principle that no single leader or entity should have unchecked power, and these actions threaten the very foundation of our democracy. As a veteran, I took an oath to defend this country and its Constitution. That oath does not end when one leaves military service. It pains me to see the very institutions meant to uphold the rule of law being sidelined. Leadership should not come at the cost of transparency, accountability, or the fundamental rights of the people. Furthermore, as the son of an immigrant, I am appalled by the aggressive immigration policies that have torn families apart. The ICE raids, mass deportations, and inhumane treatment of undocumented individuals do not reflect the values of the nation my mother believed in. These policies do not make America safer—they create fear, instability, and unnecessary suffering for hardworking people who contribute to this country every day. Many of these individuals, like my own family, came here seeking a better life, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and humanity. The criminalization of immigration serves no purpose other than to sow division and inflict pain on vulnerable communities. Mr. President, I urge you to reconsider the path your administration is taking. The principles of democracy, fairness, and compassion must not be abandoned in the pursuit of efficiency or power. The government should work for the people—all people—not just those with wealth or influence. I call on you to uphold the institutions that safeguard our democracy, to govern with transparency, and to treat immigrants and their families with the respect they deserve.
