Protect Federal Science Funding & Stop the Dismantling of Research Agencies

To: Rep. McClintock, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in El Dorado Hills, CA

April 5

I need you to fight the White House's proposed FY 2027 budget cuts to our scientific research agencies and ensure current appropriations are released immediately as Congress directed. The proposed cuts are staggering: nearly $6 billion from NIH, $5.6 billion from NASA, $4.6 billion from NSF, plus billions more from EPA, NOAA, DOE, and NIST. These cuts will dismantle our scientific research system and end innovation and discovery in the US. At NSF alone, the budget would slash engagement from 300,000 people to under 100,000, eliminating tens of thousands of jobs and training opportunities for young researchers. We will fall behind as our best and brightest go abroad for opportunities to continue their work. The chaos has already started. NSF leadership dissolved the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences directorate based solely on the budget request, not actual appropriations Congress passed. They're complying with White House demands while ignoring the budget authority you already approved. The official NSF budget request even includes politically charged language about eliminating "woke and weaponized grant programs" and "radical DEI projects." Work to ensure current funding flows as Congress directed and that FY 2027 funding matches at least 2024 levels. Our research agencies must distribute funds fairly as they have in the past, not according to political litmus tests.
