Support OSHA to Protect EMS and Outdoor Employees

To: Pres. Biden

From: A verified voter in Columbus, OH

July 2

I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and a voter from Columbus, Ohio to express my strong support for the proposed Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rule aimed at protecting workers from extreme heat exposure. This regulation is crucial for the health and safety of millions of workers across the nation, and I urge you to advocate for its swift implementation. As temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, the risk of heat-related illnesses and deaths among workers has become a critical issue. The proposed rule by OSHA is a necessary response to these escalating dangers and aligns with President Biden’s directive to prevent workplace heat deaths. This regulation would offer vital protections for approximately 35 million workers nationwide, including those in construction, agriculture, landscaping, delivery services, and more. Under the proposed rule, employers would be required to implement specific measures when temperatures reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit, including providing drinking water and break areas. At 90 degrees, additional protections would be mandated, such as monitoring for signs of heat illness and ensuring mandatory rest breaks. These measures are based on extensive scientific research and are essential for preventing heat-related injuries and fatalities. Opposition to this rule predominantly comes from industry groups that may view these regulations as burdensome or costly. However, the protection of human lives should always take precedence over financial considerations. The argument that such regulations are unnecessary or redundant fails to acknowledge the severity and increasing frequency of heat-related incidents. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 43 heat-related workplace fatalities in 2022, a number that has been steadily rising and is likely underreported. The only plausible reason to oppose such a life-saving regulation would be if one’s interests are aligned with corporations that prioritize profit over employee safety. It is imperative that our elected officials stand with the workers who are at the forefront of our economy and ensure their safety and well-being. I urge you to support the proposed OSHA heat safety rule and to advocate for its adoption without delay. This regulation is a critical step in safeguarding the health of our workforce in the face of increasing heat risks. Your support will demonstrate a commitment to protecting the lives of American workers and upholding the values of safety and public health. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to seeing your leadership in ensuring the passage of this essential regulation.
