Support libraries and librarians

To: Rep. Rafferty, Sen. Smitherman, Gov. Ivey

From: A constituent in Birmingham, AL

November 9

I am writing to urge you to support the vital role that libraries play in our community. Libraries are an invaluable resource that foster education, promote civic engagement, and provide equal access to information for all. The importance of protecting and supporting these institutions, along with the dedicated librarians who run them, cannot be overstated. Libraries represent a nonpartisan issue—they serve people from every background, belief, and political leaning, and should be safeguarded as pillars of community enrichment and personal freedom. Libraries offer more than just books; they provide computer access, internet services, research materials, study spaces, and programs for all ages. These resources help individuals improve their literacy, digital skills, and overall quality of life. Libraries also serve as community hubs, bringing people together for educational events, workshops, and discussions. This role is more important than ever as communities seek connection, reliable information, and safe public spaces. However, recent discussions around restricting the work of librarians and the content libraries provide are deeply concerning. Libraries should remain spaces where freedom of thought and open access to information are protected. Allowing librarians to perform their duties without fear of censorship or government interference is essential to preserving the core values of intellectual freedom, open access, and community service. Libraries also strengthen our economy and workforce. They provide individuals with access to job-seeking resources, continuing education, and skill development opportunities that are often unattainable elsewhere. Investing in our libraries supports economic resilience and allows citizens to take advantage of lifelong learning. As an elected official, you have the power to protect these important institutions and the professionals who work tirelessly to serve the public. I urge you to support policies that fund libraries adequately, protect librarians from censorship, and promote freedom of access for everyone. Thank you for considering this important issue. I hope you will join us in supporting the continued freedom and function of our libraries, allowing them to thrive as safe, accessible spaces for all members of our community.
