An Open Letter

In order to receive $1.4 billion in funding for broadband connectivity—much of which will be turned around and handed to existing mega-corporations—the federal government is requiring California to not enforce its laws on net neutrality, affordability, and public safety on the internet service providers (ISPs) California is paying to build out service. In doing so, Californians lose more than we gain.
The amount extra we will pay for worse internet service outweighs the money being offered. Furthermore, we lose the ability to enforce a law that prevents ISPs from throttling first responders during emergencies, like Verizon did to California firefighters in 2018.
But the state can choose to fight back, and we are asking it to. Governor Newsom, stand up against the federal government for net neutrality, affordability, and public safety.
