Demand Congressional Oversight of DHS Propaganda and Civil Rights Violations

January 13

The Department of Homeland Security released a video four days after ICE officer fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis that legal experts and journalists have identified as misleading propaganda. Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis claimed Good was a "rioter" who "weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers." This narrative has been repeated by Secretary Kristi Noem, Vice President JD Vance, and President Trump. The Guardian's reporting contradicts this account. The officer who fired the fatal shots walked up to the front of Good's car, which was turning away from him as it began to move forward, and he remained on his feet as the vehicle passed him. University of Missouri law professor Thom Lambert confirmed that "the video CLEARLY shows that Good had turned away from the officer." Critics noted that footage in the DHS video showing the vehicle "speeding across the road" was actually recorded after Good had been shot in the face. This incident is not isolated. Federal agents in Minneapolis and St. Paul have been filmed tackling a man to the ground for filming with his cellphone, snatching phones from people recording their actions, handcuffing a screaming mother, and demanding citizenship papers from people of color. These actions violate First Amendment rights, as it is legal for bystanders to film federal agents when not obstructing operations. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Good a "lunatic" in comments to reporters, despite DHS claims that the administration "prays" for Good and her family. Good's death has left her six-year-old son an orphan. I urge you to demand immediate congressional oversight hearings into DHS's use of propaganda to justify potentially unlawful force and the systematic violation of constitutional rights by federal agents. Congress must investigate these incidents, hold officials accountable, and establish clear protocols preventing future abuses. The American people deserve transparency and protection from government agencies that appear to be operating without accountability.
