Demand Enforcement and Strengthening of Inspector General Act

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. McClintock, Sen. Schiff

From: A constituent in El Dorado Hills, CA

December 16

I am writing to demand immediate action to enforce and strengthen the Inspector General Act. The mass firing of inspectors general has created a dangerous accountability vacuum in federal agencies at the precise moment when oversight is most critical. Inspectors general were established by Congress to serve as independent watchdogs identifying waste, fraud, and abuse within federal agencies. Their removal undermines the fundamental checks and balances that protect taxpayer dollars. I need to know specifically what Congress is doing to ensure compliance with the Inspector General Act and who is currently conducting the investigations that this law requires. The dissolution of DOGE without addressing any substantive waste, fraud, or abuse demonstrates exactly why we need the statutory framework of independent inspectors general rather than ad hoc initiatives. Reports indicate that DOGE itself cost taxpayers money while creating operational chaos within agencies, the opposite of its stated purpose. This outcome validates the importance of having trained, independent professionals conducting oversight rather than political appointees or temporary commissions. Without functioning inspectors general, there is no systematic mechanism to identify inefficiencies, investigate misconduct, or recommend improvements across federal agencies. Each day without these watchdogs in place allows potential waste and abuse to continue unchecked. The irony of firing the very officials tasked with improving government efficiency while claiming to pursue that same goal should not be lost on anyone. I am asking you to take concrete steps to restore and strengthen inspector general independence. This includes ensuring all vacant inspector general positions are filled with qualified candidates, protecting current inspectors general from politically motivated removal, and providing these offices with adequate resources to fulfill their statutory mandate. Congress created this oversight structure for good reason, and it must act now to preserve it. Please respond with specific information about what actions you are taking to address this critical breakdown in government accountability.
