Write Russell Vought’s reemergence in a position of federal leadership demands immediate and rigorous scrutiny. His past actions, including his tenure as Director of the Office of Management and Budget under the Trump administration, reveal a troubling pattern of behavior that undermines constitutional governance, democratic institutions, and the nonpartisan function of the federal workforce.
As OMB Director, Vought played a central role in obstructing the Congressional impeachment inquiry and advancing ideologically extreme policies that gutted civil rights protections, undermined agency integrity, and eroded public trust in government. His leadership has consistently prioritized political loyalty over constitutional duty, and his legacy includes a trail of weakened agencies and demoralized civil servants.
His most recent involvement—co-authoring or endorsing the July 28, 2025 OPM guidance on religious expression—further highlights his disregard for constitutional limits. By encouraging federal supervisors to engage in religious persuasion in the workplace, the guidance flirts dangerously with violations of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. This is not a defense of religious liberty; it is a thinly veiled effort to normalize government-sponsored religious promotion, in direct conflict with Supreme Court precedent and the principles of a secular, neutral government.
Vought's agenda is not subtle. He has shown a willingness to deconstruct federal institutions to serve a narrow political or theological vision incompatible with pluralistic democracy. His continued presence and influence should be seen not as routine but as a clear and present threat to constitutional order.
I call on Congress and relevant oversight bodies to:
• Immediately investigate Vought’s role in recent OPM guidance and any coordination with political operatives or external religious lobbying groups.
• Demand his resignation if findings confirm misuse of authority or constitutional violations.
• Pursue impeachment proceedings should he refuse to resign and credible findings of abuse emerge.
The defense of our democratic norms must not be passive. The stakes are too high. Federal leadership must be held to the highest standards of constitutional fidelity, not blind allegiance to ideology or partisanship.
