Stop Trump’s Plan to Dismantle FEMA

To: Sen. Moran, Sen. Marshall, Rep. Estes

From: A constituent in Wichita, KS

May 8

I am writing to express strong opposition to President Trump’s push to dismantle the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This move would strip the country of a vital tool for coordinated disaster response, leaving states and communities dangerously unprepared. FEMA exists for a reason—because major disasters require federal coordination and resources that no single state can handle alone. The recent firing of Acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton is especially disturbing. Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL, was dismissed just days after defending FEMA before Congress. He warned that shutting down the agency would harm the American people, and his firing appears to be punishment for telling the truth. This is not leadership—it’s retaliation against expertise and facts (CBS News, May 2025). Transferring FEMA’s responsibilities to individual states is not a solution—it’s a disaster in the making. Many states lack the resources to respond to wildfires, hurricanes, floods, and other emergencies at scale. FEMA’s coordination ensures speed, equity, and support in moments of crisis. We can’t afford to lose that. I urge you to take immediate action to protect FEMA from political sabotage. The American people need leadership that strengthens disaster response—not one that guts it out of spite or ideology.
