Take Action Now to Lower Housing Costs for Working Americans

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Chu

From: A verified voter in Pasadena, CA

July 31

Housing in this country is broken, and you need to fix it. Rents have surged faster than wages for years, homeownership is out of reach for millions of working families, and the political will to act has been absent for too long. That ends now. Pass legislation that meaningfully increases the supply of affordable housing, removes zoning barriers that block new construction, and invests in programs that keep working people housed. The problem is not complicated to diagnose. Developers build luxury units because policy lets them. Local zoning laws strangle supply while demand explodes. Federal housing vouchers cover a fraction of those who need them. You have the power to change all three of those realities through funding, reform, and pressure on local governments tied to federal dollars. Wealthy donors and corporate landlords have had your ear long enough. The 99% of Americans who rent, struggle to buy, or live one missed paycheck from eviction deserve a representative who fights for them with the same intensity. Make housing affordability your defining issue this term. I will be watching how you vote.
