Stop the War in Iran and Prevent a Second with Cuba Now!

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Rep. Pelosi

From: A constituent in San Francisco, CA

May 28

I am writing as your constituent, and I need you to act. The United States is conducting military operations against Iran without a congressional Authorization for Use of Military Force. That is not a policy dispute. It is a constitutional violation. Article I gives Congress — not the President — the power to declare war. The War Powers Resolution exists precisely for this moment, and it is being ignored. American service members are in harm’s way for a war that has never been debated or voted on by their elected representatives. It was wrong when previous administrations did it, and it’s wrong now. The question isn’t whether you support or oppose the administration — it’s whether you believe one person should have the unchecked power to take this country to war. Because the next president will inherit every precedent this one sets. Iran has 90 million people and a capable military. There is no exit strategy. No defined objective. No allied support. And no plan for what comes after. We have seen this before. The cost was paid in decades of blood and treasure. Congress must invoke the War Powers Resolution now, withhold funding for unauthorized military action, and demand full briefings that account to the American people. On Cuba: the Trump administration is moving toward military action against a nation 90 miles from our shore. The last time the U.S. brought military force to bear near Cuba, the world came within hours of nuclear war. After 1962, Diplomacy and restraint pulled the world back. Military action against Cuba would destabilize the entire Caribbean, generate a humanitarian crisis, and hand our adversaries a propaganda victory, all without a shred of congressional authorization. I am asking you to do the following: Invoke or support legislation invoking the War Powers Resolution to halt unauthorized military action against Iran. Vote against any open-ended AUMF. Publicly oppose any military action against Cuba without a declaration of war from Congress. Demand open hearings — the American people deserve to know what’s being done in their name before the first shot is fired. You must block all actions of this government until these incredibly unethical and dangerous actions are stopped. This is your constitutional responsibility. Use it, and levy every possible connection and favor you can to end these wars immediately.
