The AEA is an outdated and xenophobic war authority that Trump wants to use in peacetime to detain and deport people without regard for human rights or basic due process. Under its wide scope, the U.S. government could uproot entire communities, separate families, and discard basic civil rights protections. In effect, this law – the last of the widely decried Alien and Sedition Acts – allows for state-sanctioned terror and discrimination against immigrants. Deporting millions of our family, friends, and neighbors will not fix our under-resourced immigration system and will do even less to make our communities safe or help people thrive.
I'm writing to ask you to please support Sen. Mazie Hirono and Rep. Ilhan Omar’s, Neighbors Not Enemies Act. This bill would repeal the AEA once and for all — and close the legal loopholes that Trump could ram a deportation machine through.
