I’m writing as a deeply concerned Washington resident who cares about the long-term stability of our state, the livelihoods of public workers, and the principle of economic fairness.
Governor Ferguson’s proposed plan to address budget shortfalls by furloughing state employees is not just disappointing—it’s harmful. Furloughs disproportionately impact working-class people and essential public servants, while the ultra-wealthy continue to accumulate historic levels of wealth without contributing their fair share.
Even more frustrating is the recent dismissal of the proposed 1% wealth tax on assets over $100 million as “improbable” or “impossible.” This tax is a modest, rational solution that could generate sustainable revenue while protecting the people who make our public systems function—from educators and health workers to transit operators and state employees.
Instead of asking working people to carry the burden, we should be turning to those with the greatest capacity to contribute. A wealth tax would not only help prevent unnecessary and demoralizing furloughs, but also:
- Fund universal school lunches for all Washington students
- Maintain and expand public services without austerity cuts
- Help keep public transit affordable and accessible, especially as light rail parking fees are scheduled to be implemented
- Strengthen social and environmental programs that make our state a safer, more livable place for all
I urge you to support bold economic policy that prioritizes the well-being of the many over the privilege of the few. Public trust is built through action, and we are watching closely. Washington has a chance to lead on tax justice and protect the future of our communities—we need you to help make that happen.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
