Demand Immediate Action and Public Stand Against Attacks on Elected Officials
To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn
From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA
June 14
This morning, Minnesotans awoke to devastating news: Senator John Hoffman and former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, along with their spouses, were brutally targeted in their homes by an armed individual impersonating a police officer. Representative Hortman and her husband did not survive. Senator Hoffman and his wife remain hospitalized.
This was not random violence. This was a political assassination attempt. It was a direct attack on democratic governance.
I demand you take the following actions immediately:
1 Make a public statement condemning these attacks in the strongest terms. Silence is complicity.
2 Pledge to investigate, pursue, and punish any individual or group involved in planning, aiding, or inciting political violence.
3 Introduce or support legislation that increases protections for elected officials and their families from politically motivated threats and impersonation tactics.
4 Denounce the rhetoric, policies, and propaganda that normalize or glorify violence against public servants and democratic institutions.
This nation cannot survive if elected officials are hunted in their homes. This moment demands clarity, courage, and commitment to justice.
I urge you to act publicly and decisively—today.
