END AGGRESSIVE ICE ACTIVITY

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden, Rep. Salinas

From: A constituent in Sheridan, OR

January 16

I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to take immediate and meaningful action to rein in the conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agents operating in our communities. Recent incidents in Minnesota and across the country raise serious questions about the use of force, transparency, and respect for constitutional rights. Detaining individuals for hours without clear explanation, conducting aggressive operations near schools and other sensitive community spaces, and providing little or no information to families undermines public trust and violates the fundamental principles this country was founded on—due process, accountability, and equal protection under the law. ICE agents should be held to the same basic professional and legal standards that apply to all law enforcement in the United States. Federal officers should be able to carry out their duties— including identifying individuals without legal immigration status—without resorting to excessive force, violating civil liberties, or putting civilians at risk of injury. Professionalism, restraint, and respect for the public are not optional; they are essential to lawful and legitimate enforcement. I respectfully ask you to: Support legislation that restores and strengthens protections for sensitive locations such as schools, daycares, hospitals, and places of worship. Demand full transparency and independent review of incidents involving use of force or prolonged detention by federal agents. Condition funding for the Department of Homeland Security on enforceable guardrails, reporting requirements, and accountability measures for ICE operations. Advocate for clear standards of conduct, de-escalation training, and meaningful consequences for agents who violate policy or constitutional rights. Public safety and civil liberties are not opposing values—they depend on one another. I urge you to stand up for the constitutional rights of everyone in your district and ensure that federal enforcement reflects the rule of law, not fear or coercion. Thank you for your time and for your service to our community. I look forward to your response and to seeing your leadership on this issue.
