I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and advocate for public education, particularly for the millions of students with disabilities across our nation who rely on the vital services and funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Department of Education plays a critical role in ensuring that students with disabilities have access to free and appropriate public education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Eliminating the Department would not only dismantle the systems that uphold these protections but also deprive millions of children with disabilities of the resources and support they need to succeed.
This would have a devastating impact on families, communities, and schools nationwide. Many special education programs depend on federal funding to provide necessary accommodations, services, and trained staff. Without this funding, school districts would face insurmountable challenges, leaving students without access to their legal right to education.
Furthermore, the elimination of the Department of Education would result in significant job losses for teachers, paraprofessionals, and specialists who work tirelessly to support students with disabilities. These professionals are the backbone of our educational system, and their work is invaluable to the students and families they serve.
I urge you to oppose any proposal to eliminate the Department of Education. Doing so would not only undermine the education of millions of students but also jeopardize the future of our nation. Our children—regardless of ability—deserve equal access to quality education, and our educators deserve the support necessary to fulfill this promise.
Please stand with students, families, and educators by protecting the Department of Education and the essential services it provides.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I am confident you will make the choice to prioritize the future of our children and our nation.
