Certify Equal Rights Amendment to enshrine gender equality
To: Pres. Biden
From: A constituent in Raleigh, NC
November 14, 2024
The Equal Rights Amendment is critical legislation that would enshrine gender equality into the U.S. Constitution, protecting access to essential healthcare services like abortion and contraception from partisan political attacks. After decades of struggle, the ERA has finally been ratified by 38 states, meeting the constitutionally required threshold. However, the arbitrary timeline imposed by Congress is being used as an excuse to block its certification and publication by the Archivist. This deadline must be removed so the will of the American people can be honored. The ERA would establish a powerful legal bulwark against attempts to roll back reproductive rights and discriminate against women and minorities. It is a vital step towards true equal protection under the law. The Archivist must certify and publish this long-overdue amendment without further delay to uphold our founding democratic principles.
