Support a real ban — full divestiture: Congress, the President, Vice President
To: Sen. Young, Sen. Banks, Rep. Spartz
From: A verified voter in Westfield, IN
July 21
Dear Representative,
We see exactly what H.R. 7008 is, and we are not fooled.
Leadership took a stock trading “ban” and bolted on an unrelated voter ID mandate to buy off a floor blockade.
The modified Stop Insider Trading Act now carries the text of H.R. 9368, requiring government-issued photo ID for federal elections — including mail-in ballots — to appease members who stalled floor business for weeks.
That is not governing. That is hostage negotiation with your own conference.
And the ethics half is hollow.
The bill does not ban insider trading outright, does not require divestiture of existing holdings, and does not touch the President or Vice President.
The Campaign Legal Center says it would not actually stop members from profiting off their positions, with exceptions that swallow its few new rules.
Your own colleague said it’s so filled with holes it would make Swiss cheese blush.
Meanwhile the voter ID rider excludes student IDs and many tribal IDs, hitting voters under 30 hardest — they lack driver’s licenses at twice the rate of other adults.
It’s recycled SAVE Act language the Senate already blocked three times.
This is the golden age of information. Bill text hits our phones the moment it drops.
We read it. Stop legislating like we don’t.
I ask you to:
1 Oppose H.R. 7008 as amended.
2 Support a real ban — full divestiture, covering Congress, the President, and the Vice President.
3 Demand single-subject, clean bills. Voting rights are not a bargaining chip for ethics reform.
Sincerely,
A Voting Constituent
