I am writing to urge you to oppose the administration's expansionist foreign policy agenda, including efforts to acquire Greenland, control Venezuela's oil resources, pressure Canada toward statehood, and reclaim the Panama Canal. These territorial ambitions contradict American values and lack public support.
Recent polling demonstrates overwhelming opposition to these policies. Americans oppose attempting to take Greenland by margins ranging from 55% to 28%, 54% to 23%, and even 73% to 27% in various surveys. Opposition to pressuring Denmark to cede control stands at 49 points. Regarding Venezuela, 72% of Americans, including 54% of Republicans, expressed concern about becoming too involved. Americans oppose controlling Venezuela's oil by 46% to 29% and oppose governing Venezuela temporarily by 44% to 34%. Only 26% of Americans support a policy of dominating affairs in the Western Hemisphere, with just 43% of Republicans backing this approach.
Even when asked broadly about the right to expand territory in the Western Hemisphere, Americans oppose by 30 points, 51% to 21%. Republicans only modestly favor such expansion, 39% to 32%, with just 8% strongly favoring getting Denmark to turn over Greenland and only 29% strongly favoring reclaiming the Panama Canal.
Americans want the administration focused on domestic priorities, not foreign adventures. A CBS News/YouGov poll from October showed 75% of Americans and 57% of Republicans believed the administration wasn't focused enough on lowering costs of goods and services. Using military force to accomplish expansionist goals risks foreign conflicts that Americans neither want nor support.
I urge you to publicly oppose these territorial acquisition efforts and advocate for redirecting focus toward addressing inflation and domestic economic concerns that actually matter to your constituents. Please vote against any legislation or funding that would advance this expansionist agenda.
