Condemn Russia's violation of Budapest Memorandum, protect Ukraine's sovereignty

To: Rep. Morales Shaw, Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Cook

From: A verified voter in Houston, TX

February 21

The United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia provided security assurances to Ukraine upon its accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 1994. These legally binding commitments were made in the Budapest Memorandum, wherein the nations pledged to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022 is a clear violation of this memorandum and the assurances provided. As a signatory, the United States has an obligation to uphold its commitment and take resolute action to protect Ukraine's sovereignty in the face of this unjustified act of aggression. Failing to do so would undermine the integrity of the non-proliferation regime and erode global security. As an elected official of the United States, it is your responsibility to speak out against any "alternative facts" that would undermine both history and the rule of law -- in this case, how they apply to the sovereignty of a nation in the face of war. The world is watching. Do your part.
