An Open Letter

To: Rep. Jeffries

From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY

July 17

I’m writing as a constituent to urge you to oppose the inclusion of funding rescissions for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the proposed budget package. The Senate’s recent vote on rescinding critical funding for public media jeopardizes critical public media services in communities like ours. Federal support for public broadcasting offers enormous value at a modest cost—about 0.01% of the federal budget —yet its loss would have outsized negative effects: • Public safety: Local stations rely on federal funding to deliver emergency alerts, weather updates, and emergency information—especially in rural and underserved areas . • Trusted journalism: PBS and NPR are among the most trusted news sources in America, offering non-commercial, fact-based coverage . • Educational access: From early-childhood programs like “Sesame Street” to local educational initiatives, these services promote lifelong learning, especially where commercial alternatives don’t reach. Public media has been shown to serve the greater good—not just in information dissemination, but also by strengthening civic engagement, enhancing literacy, supporting local journalism, and keeping communities safe. Eliminating this modest investment will harm rural and small-market stations most strongly, cutting off vital services to those who rely on them most. I respectfully ask you to stand against these rescissions and vote against any attempt to strip federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Continuing this funding helps ensure that people remain informed, educated, and safe. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing your stance on this critical issue.
