An Open Letter

To: Sen. Rountree

From: A verified voter in Papillion, NE

August 15

I am writing to you today as your constituent to express my urgent opposition to the Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) proposal to require proof of U.S. citizenship to access emergency food assistance through the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). I ask that you use every measure within your power as a state legislator to prevent this rule from being implemented in Nebraska. This is cruel and inhumane. Emergency food assistance is intended to be a safety net during times of critical need. Hunger is a human issue, not a partisan or political one. When families in our legislative district are struggling to put food on the table, our state government should be focused on easing burdens, not adding administrative obstacles that leave neighbors hungry. Thank you for doing everything in your power to prevent this from happening!
