I am writing as a concerned constituent to demand accountability following today’s shocking and unjust assault on Senator Alex Padilla during a Homeland Security press conference in Los Angeles. Video evidence clearly shows Senator Padilla identifying himself and attempting to ask a question—only to be wrestled to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents. This was not an arrest—it was an assault on a sitting U.S. Senator, in front of the American public. The imagery of law enforcement forcibly subduing a duly elected representative is deeply disturbing. Democratic leaders, including Senators Schumer, Coons, and Murphy, have decried this as an assault on our democracy and fundamental rights .
The Department of Homeland Security’s claim that Senator Padilla “lunged” or was unidentifiable rings hollow given that video shows him calmly stating his identity and standing clear from Secretary Noem . Whether or not he wore a Senate pin, physical restraint of an elected official exercising oversight is unacceptable.
I urge you to support immediate, transparent action:
1. Launch a full, impartial investigation into the decision-making and chain of command that led to this use of force.
2. Hold accountable any officers or supervisors whose conduct violated protocol or the law.
3. Support legislation or oversight measures that prevent future abuses of this nature and protect the constitutional role of Congress.
If federal law enforcement can treat a U.S. Senator this way, they can treat any citizen that way. This is a crisis of democratic norms and public trust. I expect you to stand up with courage and conviction in defense of our institutions—and to make your position public.
Thank you for your immediate attention. Please notify me of any actions you take in response to this serious breach of democratic values.
