I’m writing with deep horror and alarm about the Trump administration’s decision to review existing green cards in response to a single tragic shooting involving an Afghan immigrant and a National Guardsman. This policy is unjust and discriminatory as legal permanent residents have already passed extensive vetting.
Threatening the status of these people because of one individual’s actions amounts to collective punishment. Further, it undermines due process, destabilizes families, and sends a message that even those who assimilate and follow the rules can have their lives upended overnight.
This reactive policy does nothing to make us safer. It only fuels fear and stigmatizes communities. I urge you to speak out immediately and push for oversight to stop this. Our immigration system cannot be rooted in fear-driven politics.
Please act now to protect the rights and stability of legal immigrants who contribute so much to our country.
