I urge you to strongly oppose any proposal that would raise student-loan payments in order to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.
The Republican budget plan currently under consideration would increase student loan payments by $200 per month, adding up to an extra $2,400 per year. This is money that working families should be able to put toward housing, childcare, and savings, not funding tax giveaways to billionaires and corporations.
Additionally, the plan would eliminate the student-loan interest deduction, forcing borrowers to pay even higher taxes on top of these skyrocketing payments.
A new poll confirms that a bipartisan majority of Americans reject cuts to student-loan programs. Instead of making it harder for students and families to get ahead, Congress should be working to expand financial aid and make higher education more affordable.
I urge you to reject any budget proposal that would increase student-loan costs in order to fund massive tax breaks for the wealthy. We need policies that support working people, not billionaires.
Thank you,
