I am writing to urge you to reject the SAVE Act, SAVE America Act, and MEGA Act. These bills would create substantial barriers that prevent eligible American citizens from exercising their fundamental right to vote. The in-person documentation requirements in these bills would exclude millions of eligible voters who lack passports or easy access to birth certificates. This particularly impacts citizens whose documents don't reflect their current name after marriage, divorce, or other life changes. Requiring these specific documents ignores the reality that many Americans, especially those in rural areas, low-income communities, and older citizens, face significant obstacles obtaining such paperwork. These bills would mandate voter roll purges without providing required notice to affected voters, meaning eligible citizens could arrive at polling places only to discover they've been removed from registration rolls. The legislation would also effectively end online and mail voter registration while making vote by mail significantly more difficult to access. These restrictions would disproportionately harm voters with disabilities, military members stationed overseas, and citizens who rely on mail voting due to work schedules or transportation challenges. The bills impose criminal liability on election officials for administrative errors, which will discourage qualified professionals from serving in election administration roles. This creates a chilling effect that undermines the integrity of our election infrastructure rather than strengthening it. I recognize concerns about election security, but these bills don't address legitimate security issues. Instead, they create a framework for interfering with election results by making it harder for eligible citizens to participate. Voter fraud remains exceedingly rare, and existing safeguards already protect election integrity. I ask you to oppose the SAVE Act, SAVE America Act, and MEGA Act. Protecting voting rights means ensuring every eligible citizen can register and cast their ballot without unnecessary obstacles. Please stand against legislation that restricts rather than expands access to the ballot box.
