The Constitution can’t defend itself

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Van Duyne

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

May 6

I am writing to urge you to stand up to this Republican administration’s flagrant violations of our Constitution and its due process requirement. Sunday, the President said he “doesn’t know” if he must uphold the Constitution, then said he “doesn’t know” if all persons in this country must be afforded due process. That response was echoed by members of his cabinet. This comes on the heels of this administration twice ignoring Supreme Court rulings demanding due process for Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Willfully ignoring the Constitution sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the foundation of our legal system. Rights are not rights if someone can arbitrarily take them away. They're privileges. Without due process, any of us could be Mr. Abrego Garcia, rendered to a foreign prison without a trial or hearing. A government that fails to protect the rights of everyone in the country is not a constitutional democracy. It is a budding authoritarian state. This Republican administration is currently unchecked, making unilateral decisions without the checks and balances set out in the Constitution. As it is also ignoring the Supreme Court, it is doubly important that Congress be that check. It is imperative Congress defend the Constitution and our rule of law. I again urge you to defend our rule of law, our freedoms, our democracy and our country by standing up to this reckless administration and its authoritarian actions.
