Protect IRS Data and Prevent DOGE’s Incompetence from Harming Taxpayers
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Kilgore, TX
February 17, 2025
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the unauthorized release of IRS taxpayer data. As you know, the law is very clear: releasing IRS data without proper authorization carries severe penalties—including fines, imprisonment, and civil damages—under statutes like IRC Section 6103 and 26 U.S.C. § 7216. These measures are in place to protect every American taxpayer from breaches that can lead to financial and personal harm.
We must also take immediate steps to prevent DOGE from accessing sensitive taxpayer information under the guise of “saving money.” Allowing such access not only jeopardizes the privacy of hardworking citizens but also undermines the integrity of our financial and governmental systems.
I am a Republican who values fiscal responsibility and personal accountability. However, I am deeply troubled by the direction our party has taken, seemingly aligning itself with figures like Trump and Musk—choices that appear to compromise our core principles. It is time to prioritize the security of American taxpayers over any political or financial expediency.
Furthermore, the numerous mistakes made by the DOGE team are deeply troubling. Their decision-making has included firing the wrong people, making false statements about spending, and repeatedly allowing their site to be hacked. Additionally, personal hate statements made by team members further erode trust in their competence. These errors lead us to question whether they are truly capable of managing and safeguarding sensitive data.
Please do what we elected you to do by ensuring that our laws protecting taxpayer data are enforced and that any attempts to bypass these legal safeguards are met with the full force of the law. Our nation’s reputation and security are at stake; the current trajectory makes the United States appear as a laughingstock and an enemy of the world.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
